Dallas Charities: How to Find the Right One

March 25, 2015

Union Growler Company is all about giving. We donate all of our proceeds to charities in Dallas because we want to make a different in the world. Beyond donating to charities, we’ve also gotten involved in charities and donated our time. We know that many people would like to do the same, but sometimes it feels overwhelming to find the right charity for you.

There are hundreds of charities in Dallas alone. That says something about the big heart Texans have, but it also makes it harder for the average person to find the right charity. While we’ve never dealt with less-than-reputable organizations, we have heard horror stories of charities that have gone wrong, money disappearing, and time wasted.

One of the best ways to ensure this doesn’t happen is to research the charity. To do this, go to a charity finder, like Charitynavigator.org. These organizations are like the Better Business Bureau of charities and rank different organizations as well as divide the charities by their industry. This is especially helpful if you want to volunteer your time and money into a specific area that you’re passionate about.

If you don’t feel comfortable working with a charity you don’t know, then don’t volunteer or donate if anything strikes you as seedy. One of the best tips is to work with charities that you know. High profile charities are safer than a new startup, but that’s not to take away from new groups! Send a letter, look at their website (don’t have a website? That should raise some serious alarms!), talk to people who have volunteered or donated in the past.

Another thing to keep in mind is that different charities accomplish the same goal in different ways. Some might donate to research while others are conducting their own studies to tackle a problem. Make sure that the charity you are donating your time or money to is aligned with your own philosophy. Support causes that make you passionate!

Finally, while it’s good to be cautious, volunteering your time is a great way to make a difference. Go to a shelter, help a halfway house, or read to seniors. There’s plenty of ways to make the community a better place without money getting involved. If you don’t think you have time, consider donating some time on the weekends. You’ll be amazed at how good you feel afterwards!
